At Yealmpstone Farm Primary School, we follow the validated synthetic phonics scheme Read Write Inc. This scheme provides a clear and structured route for reading, which supports all children to gain confidence as readers.
We ensure that children read books that are closely matched to their growing knowledge of phonics and common exception words. During structured daily phonics lessons, children are supported to decode words and read common exception words which appear in their books.
What is synthetic phonics?
Children are taught to read letters or groups of letters by saying the sound(s) they represent. Children can then start to read words by blending (synthesising) the sounds together to make a word.
At our school, we use Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics to support children in becoming confident, fluent readers. As they progress, the focus shifts from decoding words to reading with fluency and understanding, enabling children to access a wide range of texts with confidence and enjoyment.
Read, Write, Inc colour book bands
Children are assessed and grouped regularly to ensure that they are working at the correct level. The levels are represented by different colours and the books which children read correspond to the group in which they are working.

Reading after Read, Write, Inc.
Pupils progress into RWI comprehension groups, where they deepen their understanding of texts and build comprehensive reading skills. This is further enhanced through our use of Accelerated Reader, encouraging independent reading and regular practice – both in school and at home. Alongside this, focused grammar lessons strengthen pupils’ language knowledge, enabling them to read with accuracy, fluency, and a strong understanding of meaning.
How to use phonics to help you read with your child
The link below will take you to a collection of very useful videos on how to pronounce the sounds (phonemes) that we use to make words. It is really important for parents to know how to support their child to read using the correct sounds.
